If you are a classic car enthusiast, you may well be aware that the annual Monterey Car Auctions that took place this August in the USA is one of the most exclusive of such events. There were six major auction houses offering classic vehicles for sale including Bonhams, RM Sotheby’s and Gooding & Co with some cars being sold for in excess of $10 million each.
Whilst the final figure for the total amount generated is not yet available, the indication is that there has been a reduction in the value of sales from the various auctions in comparison to last year. In fact, this is the second year in succession that there has been a fall in the amount generated from the sale of classic cars at these auctions.
The figure so far generated from this August’s auctions is $344.9 million. Last year the figure was $396.8 million.
Apparently, the Monterey Car Auctions are a good indicator as to how classis car values are doing. For quite some time now, classic cars have been viewed as an excellent form of investment in comparison to the likes of stocks and shares. It will be interesting to see if this continues to be the case.
The top 5 sales at the above auctions were: –
1. 1955 Jaguar D-Type Roadster that was sold for $21,780,000.
2. 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider that went for $19,800,000.
3. 1959 Ferrari 250 GT California LWB Alloy Spider that achieved a sale price of $18,150,000.
4. 1962 Shelby Cobra 260 Roadster that went for $13,750,000
5. 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competizione Coupe that fetched $13,500,000.
In fact, 5 of the classic cars that featured in the league table for the 10 top selling vehicles were Ferraris. Perhaps this is not surprising when you consider that a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta was sold at auction in August 2014 for a world record price of $38,115,000.

If you were old enough to drive a car in the 1980’s and early 1990’s and took a fancy to fast sports hatchbacks then it is almost certain that you will be familiar with the Peugeot 205 GTI. The 1.6 litre version was launched in 1984 and was later followed by the more powerful 1.9 litre engine.
One of the reasons why it no doubt appealed to some people was because of the speed produced by its powerful 126 bhp engine. It was capable of getting from 0 to 60 mph in an impressive 7.6 seconds and had a top speed of 125 mph.
You may be interested and some may perhaps be surprised to read that an F registered 1989 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI with an estimate of between £18,000 to £22,000 was sold at The Silverstone Classic Sale 2016 that recently took place for £30,938 which was a world record for that make and model. That is quite a bit higher than its estimated sale price.
The silver metallic car was bought brand new by its only owner on the 8th May 1989 for £10,001.93. It has done a mere 7,986 miles as, not long after buying the vehicle, the owner’s employer provided him with a company car so it only tended to be used over the summer period. The car was laid up for a lengthy period between June 2004 and February 2012. The car is in wonderful condition throughout so much so that, apparently, nobody has ever sat in the back of it. The half-leather seats are two-tone and the interior is in immaculate condition. The ash tray and cigarette lighter have never been used.
There may be a number of other modern classic cars from the 1980’s and 1990’s that would make good investments and achieve excellent prices at auction.
If you are looking to insure your classic car, either from the modern era or one from back in the 1930’s, then why not get in touch with us here at AIB Insurance on 02380 268 351 and speak with a member of our team who will gladly obtain a quotation for classic car insurance for you to consider without any obligation.
If you are, shall we say “ of a certain age” and enjoyed pop music, you will be aware how famous The Beatles were many years ago. Well, a classic car once owned by John Lennon who was a member of the group is to be auctioned.
The 1956 Austin Princess is being auctioned at RM Sotheby’s on the 7th September in London. The car may fetch in excess of £250,000. Apparently, that is considerably more than such a vehicle would normally be expected to sell for in view of the fact that it was once owned by someone as famous as Mr Lennon.
The classic car was purchased by him back in 1971. The large door at the rear of the vehicle was of particular use as it probably enabled Mr Lennon to get into the vehicle quickly when he was being followed by dozens of the group’s fans. Interestingly, he had five aircraft seats put in the rear of the vehicle and they remain in it to this day.
The 1956 Austin Princess was kindly donated to the Austin Rock and Roll Car Museum that is situated in Texas in the USA back in 2008 by its then owner Milton Verret. The museum is to sell the car with a view to some of the monies raised being used to help some worthwhile causes. One of these is UNICEF that was, apparently, John Lennon’s favourite charity.
So, if you are interested in purchasing the above classic car then you may wish to arrange to attend the auction.
Here at AIB Insurance, we have been arranging classic car insurance for numerous clients over a number of years. Therefore, if you would like a quotation without any obligation, why not get in touch with us on 02380 268 351 and speak with an experienced, friendly member of our team.
A classic red Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti that was one of only four models built back in 1957 has been sold at a Paris auction for 32 million euros with this equating to around £24.8 million/ $35.8 million. Although it is not the most that a Ferrari has gone for as a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO achieved a price of $38 million in 2014, for a racing car, this is a world record and it is also the most expensive car that has been sold in Euros.
The classic car has been driven by some well-known racing drivers that included the famous Sir Stirling Moss who won a Grand Prix in Cuba in it the year after it was built. It was driven by the British racing driver Mike Hawthorn at a Le Mans 24 Hour race when it set a lap record achieving a speed averaging 124mph. It also took part in the Italian Mille Miglia in addition to some other races.
It was originally fitted with a V12 3.8 litre engine that produced an impressive 360 bhp as it accelerated to a top speed of 186mph. However, having taken part in a number of races, the engine was replaced with a 4.1 litre one that produced 400 bhp.
The car was bought in 1970 by the late Pierre Bardinon who was a well-known collector of cars as well as being a racing driver and it remained in the family until being sold a few days ago. In fact, he amassed a collection of around fifty Ferraris.
Apparently, two interested purchasers spent the best part of ten minutes bidding against each other for the car at the auction last week. The buyer’s name has not been announced.
Here at AIB Insurance, we have had the pleasure of insuring numerous classic cars although, admittedly, not one worth 32 million euros – YET! So, if you are the proud owner of a classic car why not give us a call on 02380 268 351 and let one of our experienced team obtain a competitive quotation for you without any obligation.
It isn’t the first time that classic cars have been found in unusual places and it will no doubt not be the last occasion but 26 classic vehicles have been discovered in a barn on Zealand that is the largest island in Denmark. Apparently, they have been there for many years and are to be auctioned shortly.
The person that owned the vintage vehicles has died but they will no doubt go to one or more keen classic car collectors. Obviously, the vehicles were rather dusty but they will undoubtedly be restored to their former glory.
There are a variety of makes and models covering the period between the 1920s through to the early 1950s. They include the likes of a Renault Celtaquatre, a small family car, dating back to 1934 that is extremely rare as there were only about 44,000 that were manufactured. There is an Opel Kadett and a number of Ford Model Ts including a Model T pickup that is highly desirable and Model As plus a Ford Popular that was built back in the 1950s.
There really must be something special about finding a collection of classic cars that may not have seen the light of day for many years. It is thrilling enough just to come upon one vintage car but to discover as many as 26 at the same location is something else and will no doubt live in the memory of those making the discovery for years to come. In fact, making a barn find like this may even add to the value of the cars when they do come up for auction in November.
Here at AIB Insurance, we have been insuring classic cars for quite some time so, whether you own one vintage vehicle or several such cars, trucks or motorbikes, why not give us a call on 02380 268 351. One of our experienced team will gladly discuss your requirements and obtain a competitive quote on your behalf.
If you are a fan of the Rolling Stones and a lover of classic cars then you may not want to miss the opportunity to bid for a couple of cars that are coming up for auction on 26th June 2015 at Bonhams Festival of Speed Sale that takes place in Goodwood, Chichester. That is because Bill Wyman the ex-bass player with the above band is selling two classic vehicles.
The cars in question are a 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250 S and a 1971 Citroen Maserati SM. The former car is forecast to fetch between £20,000 to £25,000 and the later, with its V-6 engine and self-leveling suspension, anything from £35,000 to £40,000.
Bill Wyman, who is now 78 years of age, played the bass guitar for the famous Rolling Stones between 1962 to 1993. In 1997, he set up his own band by the name of Bill Wyman Rhythm Kings and he has recently recorded and released his first solo album for thirty-three years called Back to Basics.
He loved to drive these cars rather than just keep them locked away and they were used on many a trip to recording studios in the UK and to some other countries in Europe. For instance, the Mercedes-Benz was driven in various parts of England including London where, amongst many places, he drove it to the Olympic Studios that was the location for making the records Let It Bleed and Beggars Banquet. Interestingly, when he wanted blacked-out windows on the car, he had to pay in the region of £350 towards the research costs in respect of how to produce them. The car was restored in 1997 when the tinted windows were removed.
Between 1971 and 1982. He resided in Vence in the delightful South of France and drove the Citroen Maserati all the way to Paris where the band recorded albums such as Tattoo You and Some Girls. He also drove the vehicle to Portofino in Italy, Switzerland and Spain.
So, if you are considering investing in one or even a couple of classic cars with some history behind them why not get along to the sale and consider bidding. It will be interesting to see if they achieve a higher than normal price in view of the connection with their famous rock-star owner.
It will not come as a surprise to hear that the owner of a classic car will purchase his or her pride and joy for one or more reasons. It could be as a financial investment keeping it under lock and key in a garage never to see the light of day until it is finally sold for a considerable profit. It may be as a restoration project to return the vehicle to its former glory to then venture out in it on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with “the other half” touring the quiet British country lanes.
However, what is pleasing to note, is that more and more people are bringing their vehicles to classic car rallies to put them on display. This means that such cars are being seen by an increasing number of members of the public. As a result, this may encourage others to get the classic car “bug” and purchase one.
In the main, such rallies tend to be organized by classic car owners’ clubs and take place once or twice a year. Well, you will be interested and pleased to read that we have heard of a council being heavily involved in organizing such rallies in their locality.
The council in question is Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and is to be congratulated for arranging regular rallies of classic cars in the town. These events are to take place at certain parts of the seafront where the cars will be on display for the community to look at. In fact, 20 owners of pre-1970 classic cars will also be able to pop into a restaurant on the seafront and tuck into a breakfast for free.
So, if you fancy showing off your classic car on certain Sunday mornings and enjoy a delightful breakfast why not contact Lisa Ferne on 01702 215119 who is the council’s strategic events manager for further information and register for one of the rallies. Be sure to book your place early so that you are not disappointed.
The dates of the rallies are Sunday March 30, April 27, May 25, June 22 and September 28.
